Ground conditions

A well drained soil area with good air circulation is important. Sandy loam soils are ideal. Adding some peat moss to the site will slightly increase the acidity.

Planting the Lily bulbs

Bulbs should be planted with 3″ to 4″ of soil on top of the bulb. Place a small amount of fertilizer in the hole. Water the bulb thoroughly. Asiatic’s do well in full sun. Oriental’s grow well if they have some protection from the afternoon sun, but to much shade will produce a weak stem and lessen the number of blooms. In areas where moles are a problem the bulbs can be planted into a 8″ to 10″ container then inserted into the ground. This definitely helps to discourage this garden pest. In areas that are drier or colder plant to a depth of at least 6″.

Fertilizing

Fertilize when the stem begins to show, repeat again when buds appear. Sandy soil will require more fertilization. Composts is an excellent mulch for fall and is organic. Use of Bone Meal, when planting, attracts animals and they may up root your bulbs.

Watering

Too much watering is harmful to the Lily. By nature they sustain dry periods by storing water. The soil is important to remember which will determine the amount of water. Over watering damage can be seen when lower leaves begin turning yellow and dropping off. The possibility of bulb lose to basal rot is likely. Stop the watering if there are any signs of premature yellowing of the foliage.

Cut Flowers

The Lily is an excellent long lasting cut flower. When cutting be sure to leave at least 2/3 of the stem. This is necessary to feed the bulb for next season. Removing the pollen is not harmful to the flower and will prevent staining to clothing and other surfaces. The cut stem will last two weeks or more. Remove dried flowers and change water frequently for long lasting beauty.
